The heart of Marown – Celts, Norse & Saints

Explore the Isle of Man’s prehistory and medieval archaeology along country roads and tracks. We begin with a visit to the Celtic and Norse farmstead at the Braaid, pass an early chapel site (a keeill) then past Ellerslie Farm to St Runius’ Church/Marown Old Church and St Patrick’s Chair (an early Christian preaching station), then on to the fort known as Santon Broogh–probably a motte site (a medieval timber castle)-and back through Chibbanagh Plantation.

Preparing for your walk
Moderate rating mainly on country roads, forest tracks and footpaths. About 14 km distance with 240m height gained. Please wear footwear suitable for footpaths and forest tracks. Bring clothing appropriate to the weather on the day-watch out for wind and rain!-and any food, drink and support equipment(e.g. walking poles, gaiters, insect repellent, sun cream, etc.) which you find useful. Bring a packed lunch and drinks.
